-
No engines of any kind have been invented anywhere in Muserae. This
means, logically, no cars, steamboats, airships, etc.. This also means
no machines that are not hand-cranked or otherwise manually powered.
- Electricity
hasn't been harnessed in Muserae, at least not in ways that resemble
modern light bulbs and things like that. Advancements like this may be
present in certain magic-positive societies however, as in the form of
glass orbs which house magical spells for light, heat, what have you.
- Expanding
on the previous idea, there are some uses of magic that create things
functionally identical to modern conveniences. These, however, are
mostly limited to obvious things, like making iceboxes and heating
homes with enchantments.
- Indoor plumbing functionally identical
to modern plumbing does exist, though it's actually more sanitary. I'm
not going to go into detail here. I feel like a weirdo typing too much
about what happens after your character takes a shit. It's not like
most people actually RP things like that. I'm just writing this here so
you know your characters don't have to be manually heating water and
pouring it in a tub to wash themselves, so cleanliness is the norm.
- Petroleum-based
oils (like kerosene) are used as fuel, though this doesn't mean there
are engines. It means that oil stoves exist, that it's used in lighting
lamps, for weaponry in less magically-inclined societies, and things
like that.
- Speaking of weaponry, few firearms exist. Those that
do exist reach their "most modern" likeness in the form of a hand-held
revolver. These, however, are much weaker than modern counterparts, and
are only lethal at close range (though a long-range shot would probably
still hurt). This is because the societies advanced enough to create
weapons like this are also magically-inclined enough to realize that
the destructive power of magic is far greater than guns. I can expand
if you need me to, but there's a large social stigma against using
guns. They're seen as tools of the weak and foolish, not because
nonviolence is more civilized, but because they assume the only reason
someone would use a gun is because they're too stupid to effectively
use magic. So pretty much, if you want a huge gun presence, you're
better off RPing in your own/someone else's setting, not mine.
- Bedding
consists of linen/cotton mattress covers stuffed with straw, feathers,
whatever makes sense for the relative wealth we're dealing with. Lumps
crop up, but being that it would only require mild telekinetic magic to
do away with them, for a lot of people, getting rid of them would be
something done as casually as making the bed. If your character doesn't
use magic, be creative or live with lumps, ha-ha.
- Roads are normally setted, though cobblestone and, of course, dirt roads continue to be used.
- On
that note, transportation in the cities is normally by carriage. In
Espyn County, one may either make arrangements for a carriage with a
company in advance, or make use of its public carriage system. This
works such that each driver has designated districts in which s/he
operates, and is not supposed to take passengers beyond these limits.
This setup means that the carriage can and does stop for more than one
person at a time. Many drivers can be paid to take a passenger outside
of their designated area, but it must be enough to make it worth their
while (enough to cover the passengers they could've been picking up in
the extra time outside of their area, for instance).
